RABID RABBIT PRESS RELEASE
With a creative roster of over thirty New York-based comic illustrators, Rabid Rabbit has become an unstoppable success.
Over the course of five quarterly issues, a supplement in a major New York newspaper, several comic conventions and an upcoming Manhattan gallery show, this small mini-comic anthology has strongly surpassed the expectations of Rabbit forefathers Paul Hoppe and C. M. Butzer. The two initially envisioned a magazine that would promote both their own illustrative talent and that of their many friends. Grown from an artistic community from their time spent in School of Visual Arts MFA Illustration program, the creators of Rabid Rabbit represent a diversely talented array of illustrators. From such celebrated artists as the legendary Marshall Arisman and underground visionary David Sandlin to rising stars like Xeric-Award winning Fay Ryu, Rabid Rabbit surely carries a high pedigree of comics goodness.
Rabid Rabbit finds its own particular strength as a publication by focusing on a unique theme from issue to issue. From the topical (“Holistic Alternative to the Theory of Evolution”) to the irreverent (“TRASH”), each theme challenges creators to apply their own unique voice to a unifying chorus. In doing so, each book explores an exciting new concept while offering a truly diversified reading experience. And by presenting this publication in the format of a mini-comic, Rabid Rabbit is both dense and affordable --a potently compact dose of comic book creativity.
Throughout the course of an eventful first year of publishing, Rabid Rabbit has blossomed from hand-Xeroxed zine to full press publication while also gaining recognition outside the comic book world. In their annual competition, the prestigious American Illustration chose the work of Rabid Rabbit’s cover illustration created for a comics supplement to the March 1st 2006 issue of New York Press. And in the fall of 2006, School of Visual Arts will host a gallery exhibition of selected works from the Rabid Rabbit library. Issue six of the magazine will be available January 2007.
