The prestigious American Illustration chose the Rabid Rabbit NYPress cover to be featured on its website this summer. The Illustration ran in March 1st edition of the NYPress as the cover image for the featured article on underground comics. The image was designed by Rabid Rabbit Art Director Paul Hoppe with assistance from Ben X. Trinh and C.M.Butzer.
Paul Hoppe constructed the base layout with the concept of three corresponding layers. The top layer depicting the bustling New York City was drawn by Paul himself. The center portion was illustrated in a cross-section manner of the subways and sewers just below the streets by Ben X. Trinh. The bottom third portraying the odd subterranean depths was pen by C.M.Butzer. After the inked dried, Paul applied the lovely duotone coloration.
Destined to be the Cover.
The image itself was not originally meant to be the cover of the paper. It was supposed to be an internal cover to the underground comic supplement. Due to internal upheaval at the NYPress and the sheer impressive impact of the image it was modified from its original purpose to become that weeks cover.
Aside of the cover, Team Rabbit and many of it's contributors created sixteen orginal comics for the featured story. Those comics have been collected into a book aptly titled "Rabid Rabbit's Unter Grund" available in the store section of this site.
