S. Y. choi
In 1982, Sung Yoon Choi was runner-up to the title holder in the Miss Korea pageant. She was reportedly quite bitter about it. That Sung Yoon Choi however, bears no relation to ours. Born in Seoul, Korea, S. Y. Choi is happy to have made her home in New York City, where she lives with her sister; her biggest challenge since moving here has been fighting the irrepressible urge to feed the pigeons. Soon to be graduating from School of Visual Arts MFA Illustration in May 2006, Choi most recently contributed to a book show at AIGA. Her graphic novel follows the exploits of a Barbie doll moving from a magic wonderland to consumer America, which inevitably ends with her becoming pregnant. Could Choi have subconsciously crafted a bittersweet paean to her pageant-doppelganger from the '80s? The mind boggles. |
